Dementia
Dementia is a general term for a collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain. It effects memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities interfering with normal daily life.
Many different conditions can cause dementia, but the cause is often unknown. The most common types of dementia are:
- Vascular Dementia
- Frontotemporal Dementia
- Lewy Body Disease
It is important to seek a medical diagnosis when symptoms first appear as a number of conditions produce symptoms similar to dementia, such as depression, pain or delirium. An early diagnosis means early access to support. Dementia is progressive, with symptoms often beginning slowly and gradually worsening over time. There is no known cure for dementia, however, Montessori offers support for those living with dementia, their carers and loved ones.
