Limiting Antipsychotic Drugs in Dementia

Antipsychotic drugs are often prescribed for people with dementia as an answer to the changes in their behaviour, despite the lack of evidence to support their efficacy, and much of this happens in a care home setting.

Carers that have implemented the Montessori approach to dementia care have seen drastic improvements in the people in their care, most notably a reduction on the dependence on psychotropic medications.

We invite you to read this article published in the NPS MedicineWise that looks at how we can reduce the use of antipsychotics for dementia patients and how we can tackle behavioural issues by understanding the cause of the symptoms.
